Volunteering With Celebrities

March 26th, 2012

Today we were joined by three volunteers from Nagoya Junior College. Together, all of us brought smiles to the faces of children staying at the provisional housing on Asahi Kasei Power Devices company properties. Below are reports from the three volunteers who joined us.

-Rui-chan’s Report

This was the first time I’ve volunteered in the provisional housing.

When we came here in August, we volunteered at the near-by Hebita Elementary School.  It was good to see that the kids here now are looking much happier than they were back then!

During this visit, we played and played until we couldn’t anymore. We threw zabuton cushions around like they were shuriken, and piled them on top of people just for a laugh.

We played outside, too. We played double-touch for a while. Then, even as the snow began to fall, we enjoyed fun games of tag and red-light-green-light.

“Master” On-chan’s legs were really long, so unfortunately we all got tagged out pretty quickly.

We had a lot of fun with the kids, and played right up until we had to leave!

-Iku-chan’s Report-

Today was my first time working with children in the provisional housing on Asahi Kasei Power Devices company properties. I was a little worried at first, but we all got along pretty quickly.

We enjoyed making clothing and accessories from plastic. We made things like ribbons and flowers, and then we enjoyed playing dress-up and making ourselves look stylish.

We also had fun playing with zabuton cushions, playing rounds of Hana Ichi Monme…we all got along as if we’d all known each other for a long time.

Before we knew it, we had to head back home. I’m glad that we had so much fun and that I got to meet everyone that I did.

-Sayabo’s Report-

Today, former prime minister Abe Shinzo’s wife, Abe Akie joined our volunteer activities.

Together we all enjoyed making clothing and accessories from plastic, and talking lots about all sorts of things.

It was my first time to work with children living in this provisional housing, so I got to meet and talk a lot with many new friends. I hope I can come back and work with these kids again and again.

Today’s volunteers included the students from Nagoya Junior College, Rui-chan and Iku-chan, along with volunteers from Yamaguchi Prefecture, Akie-san, Kame-chan, Na-chan, Buu-chan, Ma-chan, “Master” On-chan (Shigeki), and Sayabo.
