Now we’re off to Africa…!

May 21st, 2012

– Machan’s report –

Today we went to the After School Children’s Club.

But, before that…

We received an emergency summons from a second grade boy who was stuck at home during the long Sports Day holiday weekend.  “Onchan-Shiso, come out and play!” 🙂 We headed over to have lunch outside with him.

When we arrived, there was a nice picnic blanket set out on the sidewalk next to the provisional housing complex! In my mind I could see him starting preparations immediately after hanging up the phone. After lunch we spent a short time pretending to battle and playing with Lego.

Then it was off to the After School Children’s Club.

Today there was a drum lesson and we learned how to play right along with the kids. The drum is called a ‘djembe’ and comes from West Africa where they apparently use it’s rhythms to communicate in place of speech.

We started with how to make a basic beat, some of the boys were using their whole body with each strike of the drum. I realized being able to experience various cultures from around the world is an important and wonderful thing.
